Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports that the Red Sox could encounter some serious difficulties should they fail to avoid arbitration with closer Jonathan Papelbon by Tuesday’s noon deadline.
Last winter, the Sox reached a one-year, $6.25 million agreement with Papelbon just minutes before the deadline. With a little more than 24 hours to go before salary arbitration figures are forcibly exchanged, Boston is again risking its first arbitration hearing in several years.
Papelbon, 29, converted 38 of 41 save opportunities in 2009, posting a 1.85 ERA and making his fourth straight all-star team. Should he enter arbitration this year, he’ll be due a sizable raise (he stands to make at least $10 million for 2010, using recent comparables).
