Sherman: Yanks Could Land Halladay for Only 2010

Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes that at least one faction within the Yankees’ front office is in favor of trading for Toronto ace Roy Halladay — but only for one season.

Sherman reports that one possible scenario includes trading prospects to the Blue Jays for Halladay, whose current deal expires after next season, then simply offering him arbitration (which he would decline), and allowing the 33 year-old hurler to leave via free agency. As a Type A free agent, Halladay would likely net the team a couple of high draft picks should he sign elsewhere after next season.

That series of events would allow the Yanks to recoup some of the prospects they’d surely have to part with in order to land Halladay.

Personally, I see this scenario as extremely unlikely. Halladay has a full no-trade clause in his contract, and any trade for him would likely be predicated on a contract extension being worked out with his new team. I find it hard to believe that Halladay would be willing to leave Toronto, where he’s spent his entire career, to pitch just one year in New York.
