Let’s take a look at the key names left in the free agent market for teams that have holes to fill in the middle infield.
The best second baseman on the market right now include Orlando Hudson, followed by a group that have similar talent (Ronnie Belliard, Felipe Lopez, Adam Kennedy, Kelly Johnson and Frank Catalanotto). Juan Uribe is close to re-signing with the Giants, so he was left off the list. The Mets and Dodgers are frequently mentioned as teams that may look to bring in a new face to play second base. The Mets have unsuccessfully tried to move Luis Castillo, with the Dodgers being one of the failed trade partners. The Dodgers may be leaning toward bringing back Ronnie Belliard, as he was a key player down the playoff stretch for them last season. The other group of names should find a home before the season kicks back up. The Giants made a good move bringing Freddy Sanchez back.
The shortstop position is not so deep as several players are now off the market, with Marco Scutaro signing with the Red Sox, and Jack Wilson re-signing with the Mariners. We have seen a dearth of utility players finding new homes already, so the key names we are looking at who are still available include Orlando Cabrera and Miguel Tejada. There are not a lot of options left for both players, so any sort of big demands will have to be brought back down. Cabrera may try to get the Twins back to the table, while Tejada may need to consider a switch over to third base if he is to gain any new options. Both players can sill hit, but being in their mid-30’s, the duo will likely need to focus on short-term contracts.
