Zack Greinke of the Kansas City Royals is the much-deserved American League Cy Young award winner for 2009.
Greinke was my pick for the award, after completing a simply masterful 2009 season. He led the AL in ERA (2.16) and WHIP (1.073), and was pretty much the only bright spot on a very bad Royals team.
It’s good to see that the voters looked past Greinke’s low-ish win total (16) and simply elected the guy who had the best year on the mound.
The 26 year-old Greinke beat out other standouts Felix Hernandez (19-5, 2.49 ERA) of the Mariners, the Tigers’ Justin Verlander (19-9, 3.45 ERA), and the Yankees’ C.C. Sabathia (19-8, 3.37 ERA) for the award.
