Joseph Pawlikowski of the YES Network blog, River Ave. Blues, wrote today that the market for setup men this offseason looks pretty slim for the Yankees.
Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes will likely both begin 2010 in the Yanks’ rotation, so the team will probably need to add a setup man. Pawlikowski mentions Darren Oliver, Rafael Betancourt, and John Grabow as possible men for the job, but their asking prices and Type A status could make them difficult to make a deal for.
He concludes that the Yankees should look to their farm system for a setup man — a noble idea, but one I’m no so sure will yield them the positive late-inning results they’ve become accustomed to.
