Once highly-touted Yankee prospect Shelley Duncan has chosen free agency rather than heading back to AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, reports MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch via twitter.

Duncan showed some early promise in 2007 for the Yankees, when he hit 7 homers in just 83 plate appearances after being called up that July. He was never able to replicate that success in the big leagues, however, batting only .175 in 57 at-bats with one home run in 2008. This past season, Duncan appeared in only 11 games, logging three hits in 15 at-bats.

He’s sure to draw interest from other teams this winter, though. He smacked 30 homers and drove in 99 runs in 123 games in Triple-A in 2009, en route to a AAA MVP award.
