It doesn’t look like an elite class is shaping up for the center field position this winter.
Marlon Byrd, 32, is coming off a career best year where he batted .283 and had 20 homers and 89 RBI. he may be the gem of the bunch, but will teams want to pay big dollars for just a player that doesn’t steal bases and has only had two or three somewhat good years. Mike Cameron can still track it down in the outfield, but he will also track down many strikeouts at the plate, and he’s 37.
Things can always get interesting, but my guess is that Byrd would do well to give the Rangers a home team discount in exchange for an extra year or two added to a deal. Cameron may also want to set his sights a bit lower and consider a $5-$6 million deal if the opportunity comes.
