The Chicago White Sox have bought out the 2010 mutual option on outfielder Jermaine Dye.
As per the terms of his contract, Dye will receive a buyout payment of $950,000 in lieu of a $12,000,000 salary for 2010. Dye will be eligible to file for free agency.
His offensive production tailed off a bit last year, finishing with 27 HR/81 RBI and a .250 batting average. Dye will be 36 years old and has had a solid career so far, racking up 325 home runs and 1,072 RBI over 14 major-league seasons. He will likely be hoping to land a Bobby Abreu-like deal from last winter somewhere. We don’t expect him to be signed quickly as teams may want to look at younger alternatives.
