Derek Jeter has been named Sports Illustrated’s 2009 Sportsman of the Year, marking the first time any Yankee has received the award.
The 35 year-old captain of the World Champion New York Yankees batted .334 this past season, in which he passed Lou Gherig to become the all-time Yankee hit leader, with 2,747. During the postseason, Jeter hit .344 with three homers and six RBI, and batted .407 in six World Series games.
Jeter is the first solo MLB player to win the award since Cal Ripken, Jr. in 1995. Last year, Olympic swimming phenom Michael Phelps took home the award.
