According to a USA Today report, the average major league player earned just under $3 million this past season.

The 926 players in major league baseball before rosters expanded in September made an average of $2,996,000 in 2009, which was published in a report by the MLB Players Association. That’s a 2.4% rise from last year’s average salary of $2.93 million.

To no one’s surprise, the Yankees led the majors with a staggering average salary of $7.66 million. The next closest team to the Yankees in terms of average salary was the Cubs, with $4.63 million. That means the Yanks paid their average player 65% more than the next closest team in 2009.

Bringing up the rear on the list was the Pirates, who paid each player on their team a paltry $790,000, on average.

On a position-by-position basis, first basemen made the most money in 2009, averaging $7.39 million, followed by designated hitters ($7.34 million), and third basemen ($6.46 million).
